Somewhere in Montana: Chasing Rodeo Dreams and Finding Home

There are some country songs that tell a story. Then there are songs that give you a whole world to work with.

Larry Cann’s “Somewhere in Montana” was one of those songs.

When we started putting together the music video for Larry, the idea was to create more than a collection of pretty country shots. We wanted to tell a story about a cowboy, his love of the rodeo, and the woman waiting for him at home.

At the heart of the story is a cowboy who is always chasing the next rodeo, the next ride and the next taste of glory under the lights. The rodeo is his passion. It is part of who he is.

But while he is travelling from one rodeo to another, chasing that next big moment, his wife is back home.

She waits.

She keeps the home fires burning.

And slowly, the distance between them begins to tell its own story.

Bringing Montana to Queensland

There was one obvious challenge with a song called Somewhere in Montana — we weren't actually in Montana.

We were in Queensland, Australia.

Fortunately, Queensland has no shortage of incredible country landscapes. With wide-open paddocks, dusty roads, working properties, horses, cattle and those enormous Australian skies, we had everything we needed to create a believable cowboy world.

And rather than trying to make Queensland look like somewhere it wasn't, we embraced what was right in front of us.

The countryside became part of the character of the film.

The locations, the people and the country community gave the video an authenticity that you simply can't manufacture.

Larry's own connection to the cowboy and rodeo lifestyle also made the story particularly natural. His music has long been rooted in cowboy country and the experiences of life on the rodeo road, so this wasn't simply a character he was playing for the camera.

The Cowboy Who Kept Chasing the Lights

Visually, we wanted to contrast two very different worlds.

On one side was the excitement of the rodeo — horses, dust, action, crowds and the adrenaline of competition.

On the other was home.

Quiet.

Simple.

Personal.

While the cowboy is chasing the excitement of the rodeo, his wife is experiencing the other side of that lifestyle. The empty chair. The quiet house. The waiting.

That contrast became one of the most important elements of the video.

The rodeo represents everything he thinks he wants.

Home represents everything he already has.

And eventually, he begins to realise the difference.

When the Greatest Prize Isn't a Buckle

As the story develops, the cowboy starts to understand that all those miles, all those rodeos and all those nights chasing glory have come at a cost.

The thing he has been searching for might not be waiting for him underneath the bright rodeo lights at all.

It might be waiting at home.

His greatest blessing isn't another trophy, another win or another moment of glory.

It's his wife.

It's his home.

It's the life that is waiting for him when the rodeo is over.

That is what makes Somewhere in Montana more than a traditional cowboy song. Beneath the horses, dust and rodeo action is a story about love, sacrifice and recognising what really matters.

Capturing the Country Life

From a production point of view, one of the things I loved about shooting this video was being able to work with the Queensland landscape and the local country community.

There is something incredibly cinematic about the Australian countryside.

Early morning light across the paddocks.

Dust hanging in the air.

Horses moving through a property.

Long roads disappearing into the distance.

The warmth of a country sunset.

These are the kinds of images that don't need much explanation. They immediately put you somewhere.

And when you're telling a story like this, those locations become more than just backgrounds. They become part of the story.

Why This Video Was Special

Somewhere in Montana is a great example of why I love producing music videos for country artists.

The best music videos aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets or the most complicated effects.

They're the ones where the visuals have something to say.

With Larry's song, we had a story about a cowboy chasing his dream, a wife waiting patiently at home, and a man eventually discovering that the thing he was searching for was there all along.

Our job was to take that story and turn it into something people could see, feel and connect with.

And Queensland gave us the perfect canvas to do it.

How the Right Location, Light and Timing Can Transform a Music Video

When you're producing a music video, you don't always need an elaborate set, a huge crew or an expensive location.

Sometimes, you simply need the right artist, the right location and the right light.

That was certainly the case when we produced Craig Woodward's music video for “Over and Over.”

The idea was relatively simple: put Craig in the heart of Sydney and create a visually striking backdrop using the city's architecture, glass buildings and incredible evening light.

What we ended up with was a cinematic music video that demonstrates just how powerful a well-planned location shoot can be.

Filming a Music Video in the Heart of Sydney

Sydney is one of the most visually diverse cities in Australia.

You can move from beaches and parks to modern architecture and busy city streets within a relatively short distance.

For Craig Woodward's Over and Over, we wanted to take advantage of the city's urban environment.

Rather than hiding the city in the background, we made it an important part of the visual style.

The towering buildings created scale around Craig, while the reflective glass surfaces gave us a fantastic opportunity to capture the changing light as the sun began to set.

The result was a combination of Australian country music and modern Sydney cityscapes.

That contrast helped give the video its own identity.

Timing the Perfect Sunset

One of the most important decisions we made for this shoot was when we filmed.

The difference between shooting during the middle of the day and shooting during the final stages of sunset can completely change the look and feel of a music video.

Fortunately, we managed to score some incredible weather on the day.

As the sun dropped, the light began reflecting off the glass buildings around us, creating warm highlights and beautiful colours across the city skyline.

We had a relatively small window to capture the best of that light.

That's where planning becomes important.

When you're filming a music video or promotional video, you can't simply arrive at a location and hope that everything lines up.

You need to consider:

• Where the sun will be

• What direction the artist is facing

• How the buildings will reflect the light

• The best time to start filming

• How quickly the light will change

• Where the camera needs to be positioned

• How the location will look on camera

For Over and Over, all those elements came together at exactly the right time.

Making the City Work for the Artist

A good music video location shouldn't simply look impressive.

It needs to work for the artist.

Craig's performance needed to remain the focus, while the Sydney architecture provided a constantly changing background.

The glass buildings became enormous natural reflectors.

The sunset provided the colour.

The city provided the scale.

And Craig provided the performance.
